The passing of the Affordable Care Act in 2010 marked a shift in U.S. healthcare delivery from a “fee-for-service” model towards a “value-based payment” model. Several value-based programs were established linking Medicare payment to the quality of healthcare provided. In 2018, the Secretary of Health and Human Services announced plans to initiate a mandatory oncology bundled-payment model and two additional voluntary cardiology models. Thus, it appears value-based programs will persevere and indeed expand under the Republican Administration.
