Risk Factors for Venous Thromboembolism

We read with great interest the extremely informative and well-performed study recently published by Folsom et al1 demonstrating that the higher incidence rate of venous thromboembolism in blacks than whites was mostly explained by blacks having higher frequencies of venous thromboembolism risk factors. Although various risk factors for venous thromboembolism have been considered, the influence of systemic immunoinflammatory disease, such as psoriasis, has not. However, it is well known that clinical data have convincingly demonstrated that systemic immunoinflammatory disease patients have an increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of thromboembolic events.
