Identification and management of diabetic nephropathy

Diabetic kidney disease is the leading cause of end-stage kidney disease in developed countries. It accounts for up to 40% of patients requiring renal replacement therapy. Optimum glycaemic and blood pressure control are currently the only strategies that have shown benefits in both prevention and attenuation of the progression of diabetic renal disease. However, recent discoveries of several underlying mechanisms have led to the discovery of novel promising therapeutic targets awaiting outcomes studies.
