Electron microscopy allows scientists to understand the molecular trigger of allergic reactions

For the first time, researchers from the Department of Engineering and the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Aarhus University have described the structure of an IgE antibody responsible for allergic reactions. Moreover, the researchers could also describe the mode of action of an anti-allergy therapeutic antibody. These results represent a breakthrough in our understanding of antibodies and could have a major impact on development of new medicine in years to come.
