General clinicians manage patients with myopathy presenting in isolation or as part of a multi-system disorder. It is important to recognize common acquired myopathies, particularly inflammatory muscle disease and rhabdomyolysis but also be able to identify common genetic myopathies, such as myotonic dystrophy. Many of these patients will require specialist assessment. Major translational therapies are now available for dystrophinopathies, spinal muscular atrophy and some other muscle conditions.
