Mentorship as a Means to Get Women Interested in Cardiology

A disparity of women in cardiology remains despite the slight majority of females now entering into the medical field. Women represent a minority of leadership positions in national cardiology societies, cardiovascular disease fellowship programs, and most importantly, the proportion of fellows entering into general cardiovascular medicine and advanced cardiology subspecialty training programs, as mentioned in the recent article, “Why Are Women Underrepresented in Cardiology.”1 This lack of representation is a significant barrier to female trainees interested in pursuing cardiology and looking for role models in the field.
