Chest pain and Eosinophilia in a Returning Traveler

A previously healthy 34-year-old male presented to the emergency department with fevers, myalgias, chest discomfort and dyspnea after returning from a 44-day survivalist challenge in the wilderness of northern Canada during the fall. During this time, he hunted wild animals including fish, foxes and rabbits. He cooked his food by campfire and treated his water by boiling. On day 14 in the wilderness, he experienced an episode of diarrhea followed by intermittent loose stools. Three weeks later, he developed a fever to 104°F and sharp, substernal, non-pleuritic chest pain prompting return to civilization to seek medical attention.
