We read with great interest the recent article by Shapiro et al in The American Journal of Medicine.1 The authors propose modifying Maslow’s 1943 work on human well-being2 into a cohesive framework to address physician burnout. We share here our previously published work that adapts Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to a wellness framework specific to graduate medical education (GME).3 We believe that our 2 manuscripts, published within a year of each other, highlight that a comprehensive view of physician wellness is necessary and that Maslow’s framework is an excellent starting point.
