Chronic daytime hypoxemia, beyond the normal mild degree expected of resident altitude, is not uncommon in the Colorado highlands and is accompanied by fatigue, headache, and polycythemia greater than normal for the altitude of residence. Continuous supplemental oxygen is presently the major therapeutic option, but it entails considerable cost and lifestyle limitation.
