Microscopic eye movements vital for 20/20 vision

Visual acuity — the ability to discern letters, numbers, and objects from a distance — is essential for tasks including recognizing a friend across a room and driving. Researchers previously assumed visual acuity was primarily determined by the eye’s optics and the retina’s anatomy. Researchers now show that small eye movements humans aren’t even aware of making also play a large role in visual acuity. The research may lead to improved treatments for vision impairments.
