Alcohol use disorders

Alcohol use is associated with a significant variety of harms to both the individual and society. Screening for alcohol use disorders should be part of most clinical assessments. It is particularly important to identify people with features of physical dependence as they can be at risk of complications on alcohol withdrawal. Identification and brief advice can be effective at targeting drinking in low-risk individuals, but higher risk individuals with more severe alcohol use disorders may require specialist interventions.
